Course Narrative
In this course taken in one of my last semesters at California State University of Monterey Bay, I learned a lot thanks to the help of my professor Pablo Oliva. This course helped me identify when I was using what kinds of verbs while speaking, whether they were present, past, or future. I was able to memorize the place of accents in words and new words to reduce slang spoken. With this course I was able to write a lot better as well as speak. We wrote compositions for practice and for improvement. Each time we wrote we were asked to turn it in, and then after getting back the revised forms we would have to edit our work and make a new and improved document to turn back in. Our professor had us see the differences in both documents the first one turned in and the second one, we were able to see where we had mistakes and we identified why in the second document we corrected our error. With these assignments I was able to expand on my writing and improve a lot. By the last written assignment I had very few errors that I did not catch myself. Another learned tactic was reading better. We would read out-loud in class and while reading we had to hear ourselves and hear others readings to hear pronunciations. We were taught that we can not read fast, we have to read along with the grammar. For example, when there is a coma we must pause for half a second, and when there is a period we must pause for a full second. We learned how to pronunciate words with accents and without accents. In this class we also learned about a current event happening in Argentina, and how people are having identity crisis's. This was something that was really eye-opening to me and it impacted me a lot. For our final, our professor Oliva, had us choose a topic of our interest and present it to the class with a partner for a period no longer than twenty minutes. Since I was really impacted by the identity topic, my parter and I choose to present about identity and how it was presented in two films we saw in class. I honestly feel like this presentation helped me open up more and understand more of latin american culture, and how it is not as different to my culture as I originally thought it was. This course truly helped me grow as a student in reading, writing, and speaking abilities.
