There are two pathways by which this outcome can be fulfilled:
- The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either in language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) in Hispanic literature, culture or society. General areas to choose from are: literature, the social sciences (anthropology, geography, history, political systems), art history, music history, religion or other non-Spanish courses specific to Hispanic culture or society.
- With prior approval and guidance from WLC faculty, the student may opt for a more individual pathway. He or she may choose to independently study, research and analyze four of the following areas as they are reflected in the civilization or national culture of the language chosen to study: architecture, dance, dress, fiction, healing processes, high art, issues of gender and racial equity, music, national history, poetry, political systems, popular art, religious beliefs, theatre.

The courses listed above were the contributing factors to my literary and cultural knowledge. My emphasis as a Spanish major is Literature and Culture. Therefore all these classes helped me expand my knowledge about almost all Spanish-speaking Latina American countries. With the help of these classes I was able to learn and better understand the cultures and traditions of other countries including Spain. I really enjoyed learning about almost every country that had Spanish as its main language. It was fascinating to see how many countries grew in a lot of aspects. For example, before there was hardly any woman authors. Women did not have the power that men had to express and share their feelings through pieces of art of literature. Today i=in many countries women have about the same power as men to write and share their thoughts, stories, criticism, or opinions through art, music, movies, and even literature. This is something that really amazed me and makes me happy to know that many countries are slowly progressing to become more unified. Although I learned about many different countries I was fascinated when I was learning about Mexico. The reason is because I am Mexican, therefore learning about my roots was exciting. I was able to understand my own culture and learn a lot about what seemed in form of a question mark to me. Learning about how it struggled but made it through every struggle and how it had triumphs was something that helped me understand a lot about my own country. i was able to understand a lot about Mexico and its people. The way people thought in the 19th and 20th century has some similarities to how some people still think today. These courses really opened my mind to realize that there are very different ways of though because of history and culture. It made me value my own culture, and every other culture. I was able to see that the values and customs the people have are what make a culture. These classes gave culture a meaning to me and I am very thankful for that today.
