Integrative Narrative
Two years ago I decided to change my major from Kinesiology to Spanish because I found correcting my Spanish was much more challenging than learning about body functions. Correcting my Spanish and improving it was going to be a greater challenge because Spanish is the language I learned first and I did not realize I had learned more of a slang Spanish language rather than the actual modern and formal language. Both of my parents come from poor areas in Mexico, and therefore their Spanish was not the best either. They did not learn the language much because my father did not finish school, and my mother was brought at a young age to the United States of America, which means she started school here and the language she had to learn was not Spanish, but English. Therefore, they only taught my siblings and me what they knew of Spanish. I took a number of Spanish classes in high school just for fun but I never really realized how much I enjoy taking Spanish classes and learning more of my primary language until I got to California State University of Monterrey Bay. This was the leading factor to my decision of becoming a Spanish major. My emphasis is in Literature and Culture because I enjoy reading about the past and present and predictions of the future. I enjoy reading other peoples thoughts on certain subjects, or critiques on their society. It is amazing how much people from the past talk about things that we still struggle with today in society, in the world, in our personal lives. Reading can take the reader to the past, modern day, or to the future, and the best part is that you feel like your not alone while your traveling with them, you get really into their world that it somehow might seen like it is yours too. Culture is something really important that it does not just describe what you do and what you believe in, but it defines a person.
Throughout my years at California State University of Monterrey Bay I have been able to expand my knowledge and increase my Spanish vocabulary. I have also been able to become more literate and fluent in writing, reading, and speaking in Spanish. I was able to reach my goal which was to strengthen my Spanish by studying abroad in Mexico City and in Puebla. I cannot wait to graduate and go after my goal of helping others learn Spanish and teach others about the beauty in our culture.
